Samenvatting van: Chr. Levi Zoutendijk

Sir A. Buzzard & C. F. Hunting – The doctrine of the Trinity, Christianity’s self-inflicted wound

Alternatieven:
You Samaritans don’t really know the one you worship. But we Jews do know the God we worship, and by using us, God will save the world. (Cont. Eng. vs.)
You Samaritans do not really know whom you worship; but we Jews know whom we worship, because it is from the Jews that salvation comes. (Good News Version)

Joods geleerde over de enige God.
P. Lapide: ‘In order to protect te oneness of God from every multiplication, watering down, or amalgamations with the rites of the surrounding world, the people of Israel chose for itself that verse of the Bible to be its credo which to this very day belongs to the daily litugy of the synagogue but also is impressed as the first sentence of instruction upon the five-year-old school child. This is the confession which Jeshua acknowledged as “the most impotant of all commandments” (p. 3).

Bijbelverzen over enige God
– New Jerusalem Bible: Listen, Israel Yahweh our God is the one, the only Yahweh”.
(NBG)

Buzzard: ‘.. Christian theologians have denied Jews the right to explain the meaning of God in their own Scriptures’

Claude Montefiori has put it in the clearest way: “As to the nature of God, all Jews maintain that the doctrines of the divinity of Christ, of the Trinity, of the Eternal Son, of the personality of the Holy Spirit, are infractions of the divine Unity and false” (p. 31).

En Lapide: “The belief that God is made up of several personalities such as the Christian belief in the Trinity is a departure from the pure conception of the unity of God. Israel has throughout the ages rejected everything that marred or obscured the conception of pure monotheism it has given to the world, and rather than admit any weakening of it, Jews are prepared to wander, to suffer, to die.”

Bijbelverzen over enige God

How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that [cometh] from the only God ye seek not? (ASV)
Hier staat eigenlijk the ‘the one and only God’

(GNB)

Zoon van God
James R. Brady ([p. 42) says: “When the Scriptures talk of Jeshua as the Messiah, probably the most significant title they use is “Son of God”.

Omgekeerde redenatie
‘There is no hint anywhere in Paul’s writing that he ever disagreed with the early Church about the person of God (p. 92). If Paul became an Trinitarian or a Binitarian, when did it happen?’ (p. 93).

“When the very foundation of a religion is changed, some clear explanation is required. Such drastic theological recolutions do not pass unnoticed; witness the columes written and the sometimes bloody controversy …” (pg. 94).

Nog enkele teksten die wijzen op Unitarisme:

Over Col. 1:15-17: “What Paul actually wrote was that “all things” – in this case “thrones, dominios, rulers and authorities” – were created in “Jesus”, “through” him and “for” him. It was not that Jesus was the creator in the opening verse of Genesis, but the he was the center of God’s  cosmic hierarchy.”

“If we are sensitive to the proportions of the Biblical use of the term God, we will note the fact that it refers to the Father over 1325 times in the New Testament, while “God” is used for Jesus only twice with complete certainty (other possible cases in which Jesus is called God are alle  doubtfull, as is well known, for grammatical and syntactical reasons). These facts suggest that the very occasional use of “God” for Jesus is a special reference.

Joh 1 en ontstaan van Drie-eenheid

Prof. Wendt: “The opening sentences of John’s Gospel, which might sound like the philosophy of Philo, could be understood by an educated Jew or Christian without any reference to Philo. Therefore we should not argue from Philo’s meaning of “word” as a hypostais that John also meant by “word” a preexisting personality. In the remainder of the Gospel and in 1 John, “word” is never to be understood in a personal sense… It means rather the “revelations” of God which had earlier been given to Israel (10:35), had come tot the Jews in Holy Scripture (5:38) and which had been entrusted to Jesus and committed by thim to his disciples (Jophn 8:55; 12:48; 17:6, 8, 14, 17; 1 John 1:1) and which would now be preserved by them (1 John 1:10; 2:5, 14). The slightly personifying way in which the word is spoken of as coming into the world (1:9-14) is typical of the personifying style of the Old Testament references tot the word (Jes. 55:11; Ps. 107:20; 147:15; cp. 2 Th. 3:1). It cannot be proved that the author of the prologue thought of the word as a real person. Only the historical Jesus and not the original word is said to be the Son (John 1:14, 18). But in this Son there dwelt and worked the eternal revelation of God” (p.132).

Prof Wendt: “From the time of Justin the logos Christology became dominant in Christian theology. This logos teaching created a contact and an agreement with the philosophy of Late Antiquity. The main problem for the latter was how to determine the relationship of the lower, material world to the transcendental world of God and the spirit. To solve this problem the existence of “middle beings” was posited. These beings were emanations of the deity and represented a gradual means by which the gap between God and man could be bridged. Christian speculation about the logos as the intermediary in creation was directly related to this hellenistic, philosophical speculation, since it offered a similar solution to the same cosmological problem…  But the combining of the cosmological, philosophical with the religious and soteriological interests contained an inner selfcontradiction. If the logos teaching were to offer an adequate solution to the cosmological problem, the logos had to be presented as a real, mediating person, proceeding indeed from God, but less than God, so that as mediator the logos could link God with man. If on the other hand the mediator were to bring salvation then his being must be of equal value with the salvation he is to bring to mankind.. He must be thought of “as of a God”. As either the cosmological view or the soteriological view prevailed, so correspondingly the distance of the logos from God or his similarity with God was emphasized” (pg. 143).

Prof. Wendt: “The close association of Jesus with the One God of Israel does not lead to the Christological conclusions of the creeds. The development which culminated at Nicea and Chalcedon may be traced in three major stages.
Firstly the “logo “ of Greek philosophy was identified by the Alexandrian theologians with the preexistent Christ. Secondly Origen postulated the unbiblical doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son. Thirdly the socalled Athanasian Creed, reflecting the Trinitarism of Augustine, abolished all subordination of the Son to the Father and reduced the distinctions within the Godhead to a point where it is alle but impossible to say how “the Three”: are to be described” (pg. 135).

Over aanbidden

In Rev. 22:12, 13 it may well be that the angel (the “he” of verse 10) speaks, as in the Old Testament, as God, representing Him. The Alpha en Omega of verse 13 probably refers, as does Rev. 1:8 and 21:6, to the Father for whom the angel in speaking. The Almighty God is the one “who comes” in Rev. 1:8, and His coming may be described also in Rev. 22:12, followed by the divine title in verse 13. Jesus is the speaker again from verse 16.

Alpha & Omgea
It was, he says, “eternal life” which had been “with the Father” (1 Joh 1:2). It was that impersonal “word of life” or “life” (1 John 1:1, 2) which had now been manifested in a real human person, Jesus. What preexisted was not the Son of God, but the word or message or promise of life. That primise of life was expressed in a human individual, the Messiah of Israel. Incarnation in the Bible does not mean that the second member of a Trinity became man, but the purpose of God to grant immortality to His creatures was revealed, demonstrated and embodied in a unique human way.

Nog meer ontstaan van Drie-eenheid
Whoever knows the development of the history of dogma knows that the image of God in the primitive Church was unitary, and only in the second centrury did it gradually, against the doctrine of subordinationism, become binary. For the Church Fathers such as Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Tertullian, Jesus is subodinate to the Father in everything, and Origen hesitated to direct his prayer to Christ, for as he wrote, that should properly be to the Father alone (geciteerd op p. 146).

Constantijns judgement favored the minority at the council. … The Greek philosophically-minded Alexandrian theologians, led by Athanasius, won the day.

In Hand.

“When the Jew wished to seignate something as predestined, he spoke of it as already ‘existing’ in heaven. Thus ‘preexistentence’ statements in the New Testament really have to do with foreordination and predestination. It was the Greek who misunderstood Jewish ways of thinking and turned Jesus into a cosmic figure who entered the earth grom outer space. But is such a Jesus a human being? Is he the true Messiah of Israel?” (pg. 160)

Bible readers disregard this very Jewish way of thinking when they leap to the conclusion that when Jesus said he “had”glory with the father from the foundation of the world (Joh. 17:5), he meant that he was alive at that time. Certainly in a Western frame of reference the traditional understanding is reasonable. But can we not do the Messiah the honor of trying to understand his words in their own Hebrew environment? Should not the Bible be interpreted in the light of its own context and not our later creeds?” (p. 167)

Pesikta Rabbati 152b:”from the beginning of the creation of the world the King Messiah was born, for he came up in the thought of God before the World was created”.

Joh 1:6 Er trad een mens op, van God gezonden, wiens naam was Johannes;

Jas 3:15 Dat is niet de wijsheid, die van boven komt, maar zij is aards, ongeestelijk, duivels;

Over aanbidding: ‘it does not follow drom Jesus’ acceptance of ‘worship’ that the blind man regarded Jesus as of the same nature with God. The term which is translated worship is used of the homage which subjects pay to their sovereign and simply implies that the one who receives it is of a dignity superior to the one who renders it’ (Op. 22:8) (p. 212).

Heilige Geest

‘To ask whether in the NT the spirit is a person in the modern sense of the word would be like asking whether the spitit of Elijah is a person. The Spirit of God is of course personal; it’s Gods dunamis existing independently of God; it is a way of speaking about God’s personally acting in history, or of the Risen Christ’s personally acting in life and witness of the Church. The NT (and indeed patristic thought generally) nowhere represents the Spirit, any more than the wisdom of God, as having independent personality’ (p. 228).

Eminent professor of biblical languages, J.D. Michaelis: ‘It cannot be proved, out of the whole number of passages in the OT in which the Holy Spirit is metioned, that this is a person in the Godhead; and it is now the almost universally received opinion of leanerd commentators, that, in the language of the Jews, the “Holy Spirit” means nothing more than divine inspiration, without any reference to a person’ (233).

Jesus is God’s creative salvation plan expressed in a human person.

Origen (185-254) clearly did not think of Christ as coequal with the Father. In his commentaries on John he maintains that “God, the Logo” i.e.. the Son, is “surpassed by the God of the universe.” “The Son is in no respect to be compared with the Father; for he is the image of his goodness, and the effulgence not of God, but of His glory and of His eternal light.” The Son ‘is divine only in a lesser form than the Father. The Son is theos (god), but only the Father is autotheos (absolute God, God in himself).

‘The earliest “apologists” and Church Fathers were not Trinitarian in the same sense as the later creed of Nicea. This fact may be verified by reading the original writings of these exponents of the faith or by consulting standards authorities on church history’ (p. 296).

A former  professor of the history of philosophy at the University of Vienna wrote: ‘Christianity today is like a tree, or a forest if you will, on a mountain top: uprooted by a storm, one suddenly sees how little soil it had to hold it up … The reasons dor this alarming fact is that Christianity is not rooted in the soil from which it’s tems – form Jewish piety, the Jewish fear of God, love of humanity, love of earthly pleasures, joy in the present and hope for the future. Christianity got itself in a dangerous position through its identification with the religio-political stae of Constantine. Since Pope John XXIII, some real oppurtunities have arisen to break free from the Constantine influcence’ (p. 304).
